Arts For Recovery In The Community
The work we do is based on community arts practice rather than art therapy and has, as we firmly believe, universal appeal.
Arc became an independent charitable company in 2005 after 10years working under our previous name of MAPS (The Mind Arts Project in Stockport). Since 1995 we have undertaken a considerable range of projects, exhibitions and commissions in a very wide range of creative disciplines including writing, photography, theatre, film making, animation, graphic design and visual art.
Arc runs a substantial programme of creative activities for people recovering from mental ill health living in the community, and for the past 10 years has also run a parallel programme for in-patients at Stepping Hill Hospital in partnership with occupational therapists, including sessions in the P.I.C.U as well as long stay and admission wards.
Notable highlights of our work include:
- A radio play about Recovery from mental illness, 'City of Dreams - a detective story' which was broadcast as the afternoon play on BBC Radio Four in 2004 and subsequently short listed for a National Mental Health in Media award.
- A chapter about our work in a book published by The Royal College of Physicians entitled 'The Healing Environment -Without and Within' edited by Deborah Kirklin and Ruth Richardson
- A children's A-Z published by ARC design produced by members working alongside professional designers
- Arcdesign also produced a conference pack and large banners for 'Arteries', a conference organised by Greater Manchester Arts and Health Network at the Lowry Centre in March 2007
- In 2007 Arc was invited to undertake the role of project manager for the development of art work for the prestigious new garden in the Mental Health unit at Steppping Hill Hospital funded by The King's Fund as part of a National scheme, 'The Healing Environment'
Since independence Arc has begun to seek new partners and diversify. We are currently developing a social enterprise to include a newly established gallery and shop which will provide vulnerable people recovering from mental illness with the opportunity to be involved in its growth as part of their skills development.
We've also undertaken countless partnership projects with all sorts of partners, working with, amongst others, Continuing Education, Heritage Services, Pennine Care NHS Trust, Stockport Young Women's Forum, Reddish Vale Community Garden Project and asylum seekers (currently on-going).
